In the early morning we make a campfire out of haystacks, but it only warms the side you turn toward the fire, while the other goes on freezing. The summer really is finished. The rain is depressingly regular. The roads, which are mad anyway, will be quite impassable. And what these mean for an armored division, anyone can see. If we all had tank tracks, or at least four-wheel drive, we could make the grade. But the way it is, the wheels just spin in the deep mud and you can’t even get the vehicles started.
